Reception of applications for Kazan International Muslim Film Festival is still in progress

 

On February 1, submission for the XX Kazan International Muslim Film Festival started. The submission will last till June 1, 2024. The Selection Committee will finish its work by the beginning of July. After this, the official selection will be announced.

The young Seide lives in a remote mountain village. She enjoys life, rides her favorite horse and plays horse games with the local boys. When a matchmaker unexpectedly shows up in her parents’ house and they agree to marry Seide, the father decides to kill her horse for the wedding. Pained and helpless, Seide tries to understand her family, but she cannot allow them to kill her horse. Unfortunately, her beloved horse and Seide have absolutely nowhere to escape to.

Oscar: Academy Finalizes Foreign-Language Film Contenders
 
Eighty-one countries have submitted official entries for the Foreign-Language Film Oscar race. The only first-time entrant this is Paraguay. Nominations for the 88th Academy Awards will be announced January 14 at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and the hardware will be doled out February 29 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

"Jat" ("Stranger") by Ermek Tursunov is representing Kazakhstan in Oscar's foreign-language race

 

The film covers the events that look place in a small Kazakh village from the 1930s to the mid 1950s. The steppe is scourged by famine. The Soviets are imposing their policies. Having lost his father, the 9-year-old Ilyas gathers his belongings and disappears. Years pass by. He lives alone in a remote mountain cave. He rarely comes down to visit the old man Ybrai, and Kamshat, a girl he's been in love with for a long time.
