Synopsis of the film Gangor (photo). An Indo-Italian project, shot in Purulia and Kolkata, Gangor is based on a poignant short story written by the noted Bengali novelist and social activist, Mahasweta Devi. Upin Puri, a photo journalist, is sent to Purulia to cover a story on the exploitation of the tribals (Adivasis) living there... ...There he comes across a woman called Gangor, an Adivasi woman, whom he considers to be an epitome of Indian beauty. At first glance, what excites him is her statuesque figure, particularly her breasts. He takes photographs of the woman breast-feeding her child. He gets obsessed by her and his obsession triggers off a train of violence that ends in tragedfy. Upin's. About the director: Italo Spinelli has directed films and plays and made numerous television programs. He is the Founder and Director of Asiatica Film Mediale Incontry Con II Cinema Asiatico, a festival of Asian Films held every year in Rome since 2000, and is currently the advisor on Asian cinema for the Rome Film Festival. He also teaches cinema and theatre at the University of Siena. In 2002, he edited a book entitled Indian Summer: Films, Filmmakers and Stars between Ray and Bollywood, for the Locarno Film Festival.
