Natalia Arinbasarova as Altynai in "First Teacher", 1965

In 1965 Andrey Mikhalkov-Konchalovsky made the film The First Teacher, based on Aitmatov’s novella of the same title.

The face of the actor Bolot Beishenaliev showedthe world the image of a Kyrgyz. His was the part of the teacher Dyuyshen – a man with fine features – who, nevertheless, desperately resisted the thought that his path is wrong. Not giving in, the teacher alone resists the old time which hinders the wheel of history. Having realised his incompetence, Dyuyshen decides to send Altynay to study in the big city, where they know how to teach young adolescents. And the film festival jury in Venice (1966) not accidentally chose to award Natalya Arinbasarova the honourable Coppa Volpi “For best performance of a female role” by singling out the female image of the “first liberated woman of the East”, who leaves her home to gather knowledge and experience, and then return home to pass it on to others.
