“Urkuya”/”Bow to the Fire” by Tolomush Okeyev, 1971

The film directed by Tolomush Okeyev “Bow to the Fire” take us back to the beginning of the 1930’s into a village strained by vehement class strike during the collectivization period. The center of the film’s attention is Urkuya Salieva, the First Kyrgyz woman to be the Chairperson of a collective farm and member of the Government of the Kyrgyz SSR. The screen shows us the first uneasy steps of the newly established collective farm. The film presents the traditional perception of bai and poor people, land and property.

This film was shown in France: the screening was held at the frame of the Soviet Film Week in France as part of the Festival of the Peoples of the USSR in France, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the formation of the USSR, November 1972.
