"Kurak"

A young woman, secretly working as a camgirl, becomes the target of blackmail by a corrupt law enforcement officer. Terrified by the idea of public exposure, she is forced to enter into an intimate relationship with him. A mother, whose 18-year-old daughter committed suicide after being drugged and raped and images of the violence were posted online, desperately seeks justice but is hampered by a flawed investigation. These destinies are intertwined with that of Jamila, a prominent TV journalist famous for her support of gender equality, but also the mistress of an influential politician. Kurak is a scathing indictment of the patriarchal environment and mentality that perpetuate violence against women. It exposes how old-school misogynistic values and the corruption of the nouveau riche combine to maintain oppression. It seeks to symbolize the voices of Kyrgyz women who remain ignored and unheard in the face of violence and is designed as an uncompromising work, a “patchwork” of tragic stories that aims to shake consciences and call for justice in Kyrgyz society.
