Second Bishkek International Film Festival: Prees-release_kg
"Bishkek International Film Festival" will take place for the second time in Bishkek from June 11 to 15, 2024. For the first time, films from Central Asia will compete on one platform.
This year, the festival is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region and is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Bishkek City Hall. Over 70 guests from 26 countries and around 200 cinematographers will attend the festival. More than 30 films will be screened, alongside 6 master classes and a pitching session with a prize fund.
The festival program includes Central Asian and international competitions, screenings of films of the "Retrospective" program, and panel discussions with filmmakers and cultural figures from around the world. The Central Asian competition program will feature 11 films from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The international competition will feature 8 films.
Within the framework of the Bishkek International Film Festival, a retrospective screening of films for the 100th anniversary of the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region will be held. Its main goal is to showcase how the events of the 1920s were interpreted in our classical cinema. Four films will be shown: "Hard Passage" ("White Mountains") by Melis Ubukeyev (1964), is a pinnacle of Kyrgyz cinema documenting a major turning point in the history of Kyrgyzstan. "The First Teacher" by Andrei Konchalovsky (1965), is a reinterpretation of the establishment of Soviet power in a tragic way.
"Bow to the Fire" ("Urkuya") by Tolomush Okeev (1971), addresses the events of the late 1920s and the fate of one of the first Kyrgyz Komsomol members, Urkuya Salieva. The artistic-documentary film "Aylanpa - World in a Vortex" (1989) by Valery Vilensky and Konstantin Orozaliev, shows the course of our history through the prism of the biography of Chingiz Aitmatov. Chingiz Torekulovich Aitmatov himself served as the author of the voice-over text and its reader.
The pitching session is a presentation of film projects aimed at attracting investments. Participants will have the opportunity to present their projects to global film producers, distributors, and industry experts. 11 projects from Central Asian countries (Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan) were selected. The winner will receive an award of 300,000 KGS. The winners of the pitching session of the First Bishkek Film Festival presented the film projects "Pay the Bill" and "A Leg" by the "Central Asian Joint Production Studio" at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Six master classes will be held during the festival: Dubbing actor Alexander Noskov will talk about the intricacies of the profession. Noskov's voice in Russian is heard as Django in "Django Unchained," Red in "The Shawshank Redemption," and many others.
The master class "I Am a Girl and I Am a Cinematographer" will be conducted by cinematographer Linh Dan from Vietnam, who will share her experience in cinema as a female cinematographer and demonstrate useful skills for those who want to get closer to this new profession.
Screenwriter and creative producer Sergey Pekin will conduct a master class "It's Not Funny! Or How I Wrote My First Comedy Series." Pekin invites those who have long dreamed and planned to shoot their own series. During the master class, you will learn about every stage of creating a series and the difficulties that a novice specialist may encounter.
1.1 Studio producers Askhat Tabaldiyev and Bakhtiyar Matianyu will tell how to go “From an amateur studio to an international production company” at the master class. The AKI (Association of Creative Industries) master class. In this master class, you will learn about the benefits of joining AKI, as well as simplified and reduced taxation.
Kyrgyzpatent will conduct a master class on the features of intellectual property registration and the types of rights holders.
The Bishkek International Film Festival was first held from November 17 to 21, 2023, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Chingiz Aitmatov. It included a series of cultural events such as Turkish Cinema Week, the Aitmatov Scientific and Practical Forum, presentations of Central Asian films as well as international and national competitions of feature films.
The Bishkek International Film Festival is organized to implement the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic S.N. Japarov No. 159 of May 20, 2022, "On Measures to Develop the National Film Industry and Further Improve the System of State Support for Cinematography of the Kyrgyz Republic," and will be held annually in June from 2024 onwards.
The Bishkek International Film Festival is envisioned as a significant cultural and international event, becoming an effective production platform for uniting professionals in the film industry, creating new joint international film projects, and attracting the attention of the global film community to the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, and the Central Asian region as a whole.
